Understanding microdosing: What is it?

In recent years, microdosing has gained significant attention as a practice that can enhance creativity, productivity, and overall well-being. Microdosing involves taking small, sub-perceptual doses of psychedelics like LSD or psilocybin mushrooms/truffles. Unlike standard doses, microdosing doesn't lead to hallucinations; instead, it leaves you functional.

The first thing to know is that microdosing (small doses) vs macrodosing (large doses) are two separate conversations.

One belongs in a therapeutic setting with a guide and proper integration work. Large doses evoke intense emotions and should be guided carefully. There is a large body of research currently being carried out all over the world that focuses on large psychedelic doses helping those who are suffering from depression, PTSD, and more. People who are looking for these treatments should seek advice from a professional.

Microdosing on the other hand is far from intense, in fact, it can be easily integrated into your lifestyle and routines. You can go on about your day as normal, with a very light and subtle enhanced feeling. This means you don't need a guide, you won't trip out, and it's overwhelmingly safe.

Choosing the right substance: What drug to use?

The choice of psychedelic depends on your personal preference and local laws. For instance, magic truffles (truffles containing psilocybin) are legal in the Netherlands, making them a popular choice. Each psychedelic, be it psilocybin or LSD, offers unique and similar benefits. Psilocybin fosters connectedness, while LSD emphasizes willpower and motivation. As a beginner, psilocybin is an excellent starting point due to its gentle effects.

How to find your perfect dose?

It's important to note that each drug has different dosing protocols. For example, you need at least 10 grams of magic truffles for a macro dose (hallucinations), but for mushrooms, a macro dose is only 1 gram.

Once you know what is needed to have a heroic dose, microdosing is 1-4 tenths of that dose. So with the magic truffle example, you would use somewhere between 1-4 grams as a microdose.

Now, it's also important to note that there is no standard definition for a microdose. Most people define microdosing as a dose where you feel nothing, or sub-perceptual. However, there is a lot of discussion about microdosing benefits being a placebo effect. A lot of people we've spoken to have said "I'm not sure if microdosing did anything for me", meaning there were no noticeable effects.

In order to really benefit from microdosing, we believe that you should feel something. That's why we recommend choosing a dose that's still low enough to remain functional, but strong enough to actually feel the effects. At Microdose Together, we promote using 2 grams of magic truffle in social settings, but using 2 grams while trying to work may not be the best dose. So it's important to match your dose with your intention and note that it may take a couple of tries to find the dose that works best for you. There's no one-size-fits-all answer, as individual tolerance and preferences vary.

We like to compare it to alcohol as this is something almost everyone is familiar with. In essence, when you go out to drink you are microdosing alcohol. One drink is not going to get you hammered, and the same applies to microdosing.

By knowing your dosing limits and matching it to your intentions it will optimize the experience.

How and when to consume

There are multiple ways you can consume psychedelics. You can eat it, take it in pill form or a tincture, or make it in tea.

What you want to consider is that these drugs may be hard to digest when eaten. For example, truffles and mushrooms contain something called chitin, which is indigestable for some people, and may cause unwanted symptoms like diarrhea or upset stomach. Also, psychedelics don't have any taste to them, and truffles and mushrooms can taste very earthy and bitter, making it an unpleasant experience for some.

This is why we are a big fan of tea. When you make it in water, you are extracting the ingredients as opposed to digesting them all in your stomach. This is a lot less risky on your stomach than eating it in full. Tea also helps with the taste, and our Happy Tea blends are specifically made to mask the taste completely (which believe us, is not the easiest task).

The time of consumption depends on your lifestyle and intentions. A lot of people like to start their day with microdosing, but you could also microdose while or before hanging out with friends. It's really up to you!

The effects can be felt within 20-40 mins of consumption, and you may feel a peak moment where the effects are clearly felt. After 1-2 hours the peak starts to maintain and eventually wear off. Before you go to bed, you might realise that your mood boost lasted the whole day, or you may wake up the next day with a boosted glow. These drugs are meant to actually change your brain chemistry in a positive way that lasts. But the 'peak' moment, the 'buzz', will not be longer than 1-3 hours. The rest is just a boost in happiness :)

In regards to infusing microdosing into your routine, the schedule is again up to you. We recommend microdosing 1-3 times per week depending on how you're consuming it and how much. Once you notice the positive effects are lasting, slow down your schedule to once per week.

The key to microdosing is balance, that's why it's not intended to be done every day.

Why is this important?

We are living at a time where being healthier, nicer, and more respectful to each other and the planet, is more important than ever. We could all benefit from improving ourselves so that we can be better humans as a whole.

This is exactly what psychedelics provoke. It helps us see that actually life is beautiful, love is essential, and we are all in this together.

At Microdose Together, we take this one step further as we believe that if people had healthier social rituals and more genuine connections with one another, this would create nicer, healthier people tenfold. We believe that our social circles are essential to our health, and by making them healthier and removing a very poisonous drug that is currently dominating those environments, the world would become a better place.

It's always about the little things we can do now that can have a big impact later. And microdosing is exactly that.

Are there side effects?

As we mentioned, microdosing is overwhelmingly safe. Once you are educated on the dosing protocols, then you can take microdosing into your own hands.

The only side effects that have been reported are when one combines microdosing with other medications, so if you are taking SSRIs or Lithium it's best to avoid microdosing or discuss with a health advisor first.

James Fadiman, PhD and Sophia Korb, PhD, two advocates and leaders in scientific microdosing research, compiled a list of medications, supplements, and drugs that have been found not to cause any adverse side effects when combined with microdosing. Check their website for more details.

In summary

In conclusion, microdosing offers an opportunity for personal growth and societal change. The world of microdosing is where small steps lead to significant leaps in self-discovery and well-being.

Start by:

  1. Sourcing your psychedelic drug from a reliable trustworthy source, or try one of our Happy Tea blends with truffle

  2. Think about your intention and the moment you'd like to microdose, for example if you're looking for a social enhancer try it before going out with friends, or if you're just looking for a general day enhancer, try it at the start of the day

  3. Match your dose to your intention/moment, with social moments being 2-4 tenths of a high dose, and more functional day-to-day moments being 1-2 tenths of a high dose (this depends from person to person)

  4. Analyse how you feel and create a schedule that works for you based on your intentions and lifestyle, starting with 2-3 times per week, then moving to once per week
